I am a creative practitioner working across jewellery, textiles, drawing and graphic design living in Koblenz, Germany. Currently, I am developing a craft based artistic practice, research, writing and curation at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich as part of the Jewellery and Hollowware program. My research (Project Bawra) focuses on contemporary body ornament in a global South Asian context. I grew up in a family of traditional jewellers in India, surrounded by conversations on dowry and investments. This uneasy relationship with jewellery got me circling back to it as an artist - to poke it, play with it and let it misbehave. I received MFA in 2D Design from Cranbrook Academy of Art, Michigan, USA, BA in Visual Communication from BIAD, UK and a graduate diploma in fashion and technology from NIFT, Delhi. I have been the co-founder of Jain&amp;Kriz,&nbsp;a design company in collaboration with Krystof Kriz, offering unique, artistic textiles that combine spontaneous playful scribbles and doodles with various old and new techniques, often in collaboration with artisans in Europe and India. I have also been Associate Lecturer of Graphic Design at Prague City University, Czech Republic. The title is a play on ‘garam masala’ which means ‘hot spices’and city names in Germany like Frankfurt am Main. The work explores the complex nature of diasporic identity. I’ve migrated to a new country,culture and language several times. One thing that has constantly moved with me is atreasured box of spices. The Indian home can be viewed as an institution, where spicesplay a central role in shaping the social, cultural and emotional dimensions of identity andwellbeing. Curry Ketchup, seen as quintessentially German, carries colonial and migratory histories: “Curry” was a British invention that simplified Indian spices, many of which also hold ritual uses in India, touching the body in acts of purification and ornament. In Germany, after the war, Currywurst emerged from a chance encounter with British soldiers. Today, Currywurst is as German as Chicken Tikka Masala is British. Placed instead of ceremonial dyes, the condiment reveals itself as a palimpsest of empire, migration, and everyday life, where food becomes ritual, ritual becomes commodity, and identities are continually remade in translation. The hand gestures express multiple meanings, sometimes conflicting, reflecting the artist’s own dilemmas and anxieties related to issues of power in these transactions and her own place among them.
